Why this program

The Next Generation Europe will build and support the pandemic recovery strategy o become a genuine force for stable EU-wide change towards a greener, more innovative, and stronger economy. In this regard, the EU Commission has set targets in its skills agenda and the digital education action plan to ensure that 70% of adults have basic digital skills by 2025.

Indeed, by drawing on our globally connected multi-disciplinary digital expertise and knowledge, our students can contribute to the efforts for a more sustainable, resilient, digital-friendly, and inclusive European Union that can withstand future threats, such as climate change.
Moreover, the spread of digital technologies is having a massive impact on the labor market and the type of skills needed in the economy and in society. Automation, digital platforms, and other innovations are changing the fundamental nature of work.

At the European level, some forecasting studies point out interesting trajectories in the transformation of work related to automation and ICT technologies. On the one hand, digital technologies make superfluous some tasks that do not require high levels of education; on the other hand, they prompt the development of new professions that require "digital and non-cognitive skills", i.e. digital skills integrated with relational and social skills, complemented by the ability to be resilient with respect to the massive changes that affect the world of work. Public and private organizations face a shortage of digital experts who can develop cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of all citizens. A strong digital economy powered by digital experts is vital for innovation, growth, jobs, and competitiveness.

Programme Objectives

The MSc in Digital Skills for Sustainable Societal Transitions trains digital experts, those professional figures who are able to integrate ICT and social science skills that are needed to manage the socio-spatial transitions related to the increasing availability of Big and Open Data in the wider context of the transition of societies and urban realities towards new models of relationship, production, and consumption.

Graduates in the master's degree programs in the class will:

  • be able to combine the methods and techniques of business management and public and private administration with the technologies and methodologies of information technology, possessing skills in each of the areas;
  • be able to effectively interpret change and technological and organizational innovation in companies and administrations;
  • be able to operate in interdisciplinary groups made up of experts with expertise in the fields of information technology and economic-managerial, as well as with expertise in specific application areas, having general knowledge in each of the areas and more in-depth knowledge in at least one of them;
  • be able to deal with regulatory issues related to the use of information and telematic technologies (with reference, among others, to problems of security, protection of confidentiality, legal validity);
  • be able to interpret innovation within companies and administrations and to design new solutions for the use of information and communication technologies in these areas.

Who is this MSc for

The master's degree program is designed for all students from all over the world who are interested in consolidating and strengthening their knowledge and skills in the field of technological and digital transitions affecting societies.
The program will also allow those students who do not have previous skills in computer science to acquire basic knowledge of the most important approaches to programming digital systems that support innovative data management in different areas, e.g., business, public administration, and NGOs operating in the territory.

The course is therefore designed for students interested in the digital transformation and its applications in the relevant dimensions of the current transition within mobility, intelligent production, communication, heritage protection, and public management.
